'Press F to Pay Respects' in Call of Duty: Vanguard Meme

Players of Call of Duty: Vanguard notices a reference to the classic ‘Press F to Pay Respects’ moment from Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare in the game.

If you are familiar with the Call of Duty franchise in any way, you are likely to be familiar with the famed “Press F to Pay Respects” moment. The weird moment first appeared in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare in 2014 during a funeral scene early in the campaign, and it has since gone on to become a meme and become part of the vernacular of gamers worldwide. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by the makers of Call of Duty: Vanguard, who have skillfully inserted the “F” meme into the game.

Vanguard, the newest instalment in the long-running Call of Duty franchise, will be released on November 14. With over 20 multiplayer maps available at launch, the new title boasts a diverse collection of new and resurrected content. In addition, there are some noticeable enhancements over last year’s title, including the addition of dedicated Zombies servers, which Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War enthusiasts have been requesting since the game’s initial release.

Sledgehammer Games is developing Call of Duty: Vanguard, the same company that created Advanced Warfare and, as a result, the viral “Press F to Pay Respects” meme. As revealed by Twitter user MissMolle, players can only obtain the hilarious achievement (or trophy) during the campaign, and only if they take a certain, although suicidal action throughout that campaign. The video shows the gamer dispatching an enemy dog with relative ease before noticing that a grenade is at their feet. During MissMolle’s effort to toss the bomb back, the device detonates just before it is released, instantly killing them and awarding the prize.

The number of players who purposely die by their hand to obtain the meme-themed achievement is certain to rise due to the achievement’s subject. However, in Call of Duty: Vanguard, it isn’t the only achievement that a meme has inspired. It was made popular by the classic 1990s ads, and even more so by Family Guy’s “OH YEAH!’ achievement/trophy, inspired by the Kool-Aid Man’s catchphrase. To demonstrate Vanguard’s increased environment destructibility, players must Tactical Sprint through at least five destructible walls during the campaign’s first half.

In contrast to Call of Duty: Vanguard, which appears to have its finger on the pulse of internet culture, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (released in 2020) contains a funny meme Easter egg of its own. When playing Die Maschine, the first Zombies map in Black Ops Cold War, players can do the infamous “Coffin Dance” by hitting all five blue orbs scattered throughout the area. After the third orb is struck, zombies will burst into the viral video dance, replete with neon lighting, bouncy music, and a crate to replicate Ghana’s famous pallbearers, as shown in the viral video. It’s reasonable to say that all gamers enjoy the unexpected meme content that appears in Call of Duty games.

With the debut of Call of Duty: Vanguard, there will almost certainly be some viral moments of their own that will appear on the internet sooner or later. While this is going on, gamers may feel the need to hit “F” for the player who spawned at the enemy spawn point.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is currently available for purchase on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S consoles.
