Monitoring servers and applications used to be a tedious task due to a lack of appropriate tools. It’s critical to resolve any issues that arise on a server before they affect users. The competition is fiercer now than ever before, and even a minor hiccup can cause major concerns, including financial. From money transfers to communication and trade, practically everything is digital these days. That’s excellent because it makes life easier for humans, but it also means massive amounts of data are being received and distributed simultaneously. Thus, monitoring apps and servers have become critical.
Server and Application Monitor Setup
You must first download and install the software before we can begin monitoring. You may receive a 30-day free trial of the tool here. Just fill in the blanks, and you’re good to go. After downloading, launch the.exe file. Solarwinds employs an Orion Installer to install and upgrade products. SAM, NPM, and other Solarwinds products are part of the Orion platform. You may use it to browse items, change their settings, get alerts, etc. To install the tool, follow these steps:
- After running the installer, a UAC dialogue box (click Yes) and an initializing window will appear. The setup wizard will appear in a few seconds (up to a minute).
- Once the installer is running, the Solarwinds Setup Wizard will open. Three options will be provided with the requisites below. Install Lightweight.
- Click Browse to find the software installation location.
- Then click Next.
- Now you can see the Server and Application Monitor utility already installed. Other Solarwinds products are listed under Additional Products and can be installed using this installer. Don’t pick anything and press Next.
- Accept the license and click Next again.
- Wait for the software to download and install, depending on your internet speed. So wait.
- After the installation, the database configuration wizard will automatically configure the database.
- Finalize the configuration wizard by clicking Finish.
Server and Application Monitor
Now that the software has been downloaded and installed, it’s time to monitor your servers and applications. The process is detailed but not difficult. Nonetheless, we will guide you through each step, so no worries.
After closing the setting wizard as described above, you will be directed to the Orion web console. Using this dashboard, you can view and configure all your servers and applications. So, to start:
- After completing the configuration procedure, you will be sent to the Orion web console. Create a password for the admin account here. Then press Enter.
- Once on the Discovery screen, you may start monitoring your server and applications. Before you click the Start button, you should list the devices you want to monitor. - So, hit the Start button.
- To monitor devices, you must now supply their IP addresses or IP ranges. The Active Directory Domain Controller can be used to add nodes to SAM.
- If you are using a VMware vCenter server, enter the credentials and click Next.
- Enable ‘Check all existing nodes polled by an agent on the Agents panel if you have any. Next.
- Enter the needed credentials in the SNMP tab and click Next to monitor any SNMP-enabled device.
- Then add a new credential to find WMI Windows devices. Then Next.
- It now allows you to choose the polling mechanism (WMI over SNMP, for example) and what to monitor on the devices (manually or let the software determine based on your monitoring settings). Solarwinds advises against using SNMP to monitor Windows devices. To see how it works, select ‘Automatically monitor based on my defined monitoring settings.’ You can also pick ‘Manually set up monitoring after devices are found’ to do so.

- Select the devices’ Status, Port Mode, and Hardware on the Interfaces tab. You can add specific phrases or keywords to the advanced filtering options (i.e., Interface type, name, etc.).
- Then select the volume types to monitor. Then select the apps to monitor and click Finish.
- Next, click.
- Click Next in Discovery Settings.
- You can modify the frequency to find devices after it.
- Finally, click Discover and wait for the network to be discovered. This depends on how many devices you added.
Adding Found Servers and Apps to SAM
If you choose ‘Manually set up monitoring after devices are found,’ you must now set up monitoring. If you chose automated, SAM already owns the device. This section only applies if you choose manual. After utilizing the Discovery wizard to find the servers or devices, you wish to monitor, add them to Server and Application Monitor. Then you can monitor the servers and applications. How to:
- After the discovery process is finished, pick the devices you wish to monitor and click Next.
- Next, pick the interfaces you wish to monitor.
- Then choose the volume types to monitor, then the apps.
- Examine the device to be imported in the Import Preview pane, then click Import.
- Result tab: Finish
- Your device has been added to SAM.
- View the new devices in My Dashboard > SAM Summary.
You may now start monitoring the devices you added to SAM. Server and Application Monitor provides hundreds of templates for monitoring servers and applications. How to add a template to a node:
- Go to SAM Settings under Settings > All Settings.
- To manage templates, click Manage Templates.
- Select the template and click Assign to Node.
- To transfer a node from the left pane to the right pane, click on the green arrow. Select the right pane node and click Next.
- Now you must select the credentials. Then select Assign Application Monitors.
- Finalize the panel using Done.
- After clicking Done, you’ll be taken to the SAM Summary page with the template. The data will be presented in a few minutes.
How can I monitor apps in Sam?
In SAM settings, select Manage Templates. Then click Assign to Node. Click the green arrow to move the Windows node to the right pane, then click Next. Select the credentials, then click Assign Application Monitor.
