Installing NPM

First, you must install the NPM utility on your system. To download the tool, go to this page and select Download Free Trial. SAM, IPAM, SCM, and other Solarwinds products will be downloaded and installed using the Orion Installer. After downloading, follow the steps below to install the tool:

  1. Wait for the Orion Installer to open.
  2. Choose Lightweight Installation to install all essential components to evaluate the tool. If you want to test it on your main SQL server, select Standard Installation. Click Browse to change the installation directory. Then Next.
  3. Select Network Performance Monitor from the Select Products tab and click Next.
  4. The installation then runs a few system checks. Wait for the end.
  5. Afterward, click Next.
  6. The installation will start. Wait for the Orion Installer to complete Network Performance Monitor.
  7. The Configuration Wizard will appear after the Installation Wizard. Click Next to start the wizard.
  8. Check the services and click Next on the Service Settings screen.
  9. Specify your database credentials and click Next.
  10. On the Database Account page, you can create or supply the Orion Web Console credentials to access the database. Next.
  11. Activate the Configuration Wizard. Please wait for it to finish and then click Finish.

Finding Your Network

After installing Network Performance Monitor, you must connect to the Orion Web Console and use the Network Sonar Wizard to discover your network. Here’s how to do it:

  1. After closing the configuration wizard, you will be sent to the Orion Web Console. If not, open a web browser and type ‘HostnameorIPaddress:Port.’ Orion Web Console’s default port is 8787.
  2. When you first access the admin user, you will be requested to create a password. So click Save & Login.
  3. On the toolbar, select Settings > Network Discovery.

  5. You can discover your network using an IP address range, a subnet, an individual IP address, or the Active Directory Controller. Fill out one of the fields and click Next.
  6. On the Agents page, select the provided choice (self-explanatory) and click Next.
  7. On the Virtualization page, look for any VMware ESX or vCenter hosts. Select Add New Credential, provide the appropriate credentials, and save.
  8. On the SNMP page, click the Add New Credential button and enter the credentials. Use the Add New Credential option to add SNMPv1 and SNMPv2 community strings other than public and private.
  9. Then, click the Add New Credential button and enter the credentials on the Windows page. Then Next.
  10. When detecting Windows devices in the Monitoring Settings panel, utilize WMI as the polling mechanism. Click Next after selecting ‘Manually set up monitoring after devices are detected.’
  11. On the Discovery Settings screen, name this discovery and then Next.
  12. Change the Frequency on the Discovery Scheduling page to scan your network more than once. Then click Discover.

Adding Devices to NPM

After utilizing the Network Sonar Wizard to find your network, you must import the identified devices to NPM. The Network Sonar Results Discovery window appears automatically after the Network Sonar Wizard discovers your network. How to add devices:

  1. Click Next after selecting the devices to monitor.
  2. Then select the interfaces to monitor and click Next.
  3. Then select the volume kinds you want to monitor and click Next.
  4. Click Import after reviewing the import summary.
  5. After the Import is finished, click Finish on the Results page.

Begin tracking

Now that everything is set up, you can start monitoring your NPM devices. To do so, go to My Dashboard > NPM. A summary of your gadgets will be provided here. It may not be instantaneous as the tool collects data. After collecting enough data, it will display your network’s performance for easy monitoring. The app also gives notifications that you can monitor to fix network difficulties.
