How to Use a Database Performance Analyzer to Monitor Your Database's Performance?

Installing DBA

The first step is to install DPA on your PC. To do so, go to this link and click on Download Free Trial. After submitting the form, download the program for your operating system and follow the procedures below:

  1. Extract file to any directory. Start the setup wizard by running the SolarWindsDPASetup-x64.exe file.
  2. Next, when the setup wizard loads.
  3. Then click Next again to accept the license. Next.
  4. Click Change to change the tool’s installation directory. Then Next.
  5. Press Install to start the installation.
  6. After installation, click Finish.

Repository Database Creation

After installing DPA, you must build a DPA repository database. Data from Solarwinds Database Performance Analyzer and user credentials will be stored in this repository database. Create a SQL Server repository database by:

  1. Open a browser after installing the tool. In a new tab, type ServerNameorIP:8123 or ServerNameorIP:8124.
  2. Select ‘New DPA Repository.’
  3. Next, select the database type. Since this is a SQL Server repository, we will choose Microsoft SQL Server.
  4. Enter the server’s IP and port. Then select the authentication method. Enter your credentials and click Next.
  5. Create a new repository database account with a username and password. Then Next.
  6. Then choose an existing database or create one. When you create a new database, the prefix dpa_ is applied to identify it.
  7. Give your name and email for performance reports.
  8. Then click Create Repository.
  9. Wait for the repository database to be created.
  10. After that, you’ll be prompted to set up database monitoring. Press the button.

Registering Database Instances

Now that we have a repository database containing all DPA data, we can register database instances to be monitored. We’ll use the Register Instance Wizard for this. How to:

  1. After building a repository database, you are prompted to register database instances. Click it to access the ‘Registration Wizard.’ Select ‘Register DB Instance for Monitoring’ on the DPA homepage if the wizard doesn’t start automatically.
  2. Click Next after selecting the database instance type.
  3. Enter the SQL Server’s IP address and port. Specify the authentication method and credentials. Then Next.
  4. Enter the account that will be used to monitor the instance. Create a monitoring account. For that, select SQL Server Authentication and provide a password.
  5. Register Database Instance after viewing the summary.
  6. After the instance has been registered, click Finish.

Begin tracking

Now you may start monitoring your database instance. To register more instances, select Options, then Register under Database Instances. Go to the homepage, click on it, and you’re done monitoring a database instance.
